Volunteer Visa: Your Guide to Volunteering in South Africa

Volunteers Visa

The South African Volunteer Visa, also known as the long-stay visitor’s visa, allows foreign nationals to engage in volunteer or charity work within the country. This visa is ideal for individuals who wish to participate in unpaid volunteer work and can cover their own living expenses.

General Eligibility:

  1. Affiliation with a Bona Fide Organisation
Your volunteer work must be with a recognized charity or volunteering institution.
  2. Purpose of Visit
Provide a written statement explaining the purpose of your visit and the nature of your volunteer work.
  3. Proof of Financial Means
Show that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay. Acceptable forms include:
    • Bank statements
    • Cash available
    • Traveler’s cheques
  4. Return Flight Ticket
Provide proof of a return flight ticket if your stay does not exceed 12 months. If a return ticket cannot be provided, you may need to make a refundable deposit.
  5. Deposit Requirement
If you are unable to submit proof of a return ticket, a refundable deposit may be required. This deposit can be paid via a bank guaranteed cheque or credit card, where such facilities are available.
  6. Health and Security Documentation
    • Medical and radiology reports, if required.
    • Police clearance certificate from countries where you have lived for 12 months or more since turning 18.
