UPDATE: South Africa’s Digital Nomad Visa Regulations

As of May 20, 2024, South Africa has updated the Immigration Regulations impacting individuals seeking digital nomad visas. These changes aim to streamline processes and clarify requirements for applicants.

Key Updates to the Remote Work Visa:

Income Requirement:

   – To qualify for a remote work visa, you must earn a gross income of at least R1,000,000 (One Million Rand) per year from your foreign employer or if you are self employed.

Tax Registration:

   – If your remote work visa is for a period not exceeding 6 months within a 36-month period, you may apply for an exemption from registering as a taxpayer with the South African Revenue Service.

   – If your remote work visa exceeds 6 months within a 36-month period, you must register with the South African Revenue Service as a taxpayer.

Employment Compliance:

   – You must comply with South African laws governing the employment of workers if applicable to your situation.

Visa Duration and Conditions:

   – The visa will specify the duration of stay and the nature of the activities allowed, ensuring that you can seamlessly blend work and travel.
