STUDY VISA (MINORS)

What is it?

Foreign children who want to attend school in South Africa need to apply for a study visa. The study visa will be issued for the full duration of the programme.
  • The applicant must have received a letter of (provisional) acceptance at a South African learning institution.
  • “Learning institution” means schools contemplated in section 1 of the South African Schools Act, 1996 (Act No. 84 of 1996).
  • The applicant must have proof of medical cover for the duration of the exchange period with a South African medical aid provider registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act, or be included as a dependent or beneficiary on the foreign/overseas medical insurance of the parent of legal guardian.
  • For learners under the age of 18 who are not accompanying a parent or both parents, a legal guardian in South Africa must be appointed.
  • The study visa is only valid in conjunction with the specific course/programme for which it was issued, and will lapse automatically if the learner fails to register with, or is de-registered from, the learning institution at any time during the period for which the visa was issued.
