Permanent Residence Permit

What is it?

Applicants with critical skills and at least 5 years of post-qualification work experience can apply for permanent residence status.
  • The applicant must fall within an occupational category recognised as a critical skill
  • Foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) in terms of local educational standards
  • The applicant must be registered as a member with the appropriate professional body for their occupational field in South Africa and obtain a skills confirmation letter
  • The applicant must have acquired at least 5 years of practical work experience after completing their formal education.
  • This type of permanent residence is usually finalised within 8 months.
  • An offer of employment is not required for this type of permanent residence application (but may be declared voluntarily, if applicable)
  • Once the permanent residence permit is approved, the holder is no longer limited to working in their designated skills category only and does not need to report their employer to the Department of Home Affairs.
